Natural gas sets the bar in European wholesale power prices

This analysis demonstrates how fossil fuel power plants, natural gas in particular, play an outsized role in setting EU wholesale power prices in 2022 and are projected to retain this influence in 2030. Gas run power plants set the price 55% of the time in 2022 while generating 19% of total EU electricity. In 2030,the price-setting share is still close to 56%,even with generation decreasing to 11% of electricity
