European electricity market review 2023: coal and gas down significantly

Last year, the EU saw a record 19% drop in fossil fuel electricity generation, with coal and gas making up less than a third of its electricity mix for the first time. Coal generation plummeted by 26% to its lowest level ever, representing just 12% of the mix, while gas generation decreased by 15%, marking its largest annual reduction since 1990.
