Imports reached 𝟵.𝟰𝐦 metric tonnes in January, a record high and a month-on-month jump of 40% according to ICIS LNG Edge data going back to 2012. The figure was more than double last year’s volumes. The 2018-2020 average for the month is 6.5m tonnes.

Top importer was the 𝗨𝗞 with 𝟮.𝟰𝗺 tonnes with France in second place with 2.3m.

Europe accounted for a 𝟮𝟱% share of global LNG imports, six percentage points higher than December’s levels, and the highest January ever.

The LNG influx also led to sendout recording its highest monthly average ever in January with 416mcm/day.

𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚:

Imports for the top 5 buyers – China, Japan, South Korea, India and Taiwan – fell to 𝟮𝟮𝐦 tonnes in January, a monthly fall of 4%.

Easing demand led to Asia taking a smaller share of global LNG imports, accounting for 𝟱𝟵% in January, a nine-month low. This also marked a yearly drop of 18 percentage points.

China was the leading importer, accounting for 𝟳.𝟮𝗺 tonnes in January, while Japan remained in second place with 7.1m tonnes.
