Ukraine's gas market presents the institutional platform tying the gas sector with the whole economy, and a critical element of not only resource support for economic development of the country, but also of its national security.
That is why formation of the national gas market is among the priorities of the basic document outlining the prospects of the national fuel and energy sector - the Energy Strategy of Ukraine through 2030 (hereinafter - the Energy
Strategy).
However, the current state of Ukraine's gas sector sees extremely high dependence on imports of natural gas, aggravated by the impracticability of diversification of supply, monopoly of the domestic market, a distorted pricing
policy and a low level of investments in the gas sector development.
Regulatory - legal support for the gas sector operation does not meet market requirements, hinders the development of competition and use of potential capabilities of the gas sector. The Ukrainian legislation on the gas sector is not
harmonised with regulatory-legal acts of the EU, which hinders the country's integration into the European energy space.
This section briefly describes the state of Ukraine's gas sector, institutional support for its operation, outlines problems of formation of the gas market.
